I'm having similar issues if anyone can help.

I'm trying to save my 8 minute movie made in Windows Movie Maker 2.6 using Windows 8. (the new version of Movie Maker that came with the computer is hopeless in comparison) When I try to publish the video, a dialog box pops up and says 'Windows Movie Maker cannot publish the movie to the specified location. Verify that the original source files used in your movie are still available, that the publishing location is still available, that there is enough free disk space available, and then try again.' I have plenty of space, the source files and publishing location are still available and I've had no problem with shorter movies - so is it really that it just can't cope with an 8 minute movie which has admittedly quite a few overlaps but only a few effects? Other online advice suggests saving it to Other Settings and I've tried High Quality Video (large and small) which produces the same error message and also DV-AVI and using that the green bar at least comes across and appears to be saving but on completion reverts to the same error message. Does anyone have any preferably simple solution that would fix this, it's very frustrating after all the work put in. Also, I should mention that my original files are AVI and is that something that's compatible with Youtube anyway? Many thanks Andy

A few things:

  1. Have you considered usingMovie Maker 6.0 instead of 2.6? (It still has the traditional timeline, but uses the GPU, is 64-bit and is better at using memory.)
  2. Is there a reason you need to save in AVI format? I believe that is actually DV-AVI format with a 480p maximum resolution. It would be better to save in WMV to get HD resolutions.
  3. What error messages are you getting when you try to save your movie?
  4. Does it get to a certain percentage? Have you tried making a copy of your project and only keeping the first X% of your project to see if that will save as a movie? For example, if it seems to only get to 60%, then delete the last 40% of your timeline (in a COPY of the project file). If that saves as a movie, try making another copy of the original project and deleting the first part that is already saved. In the end you'll have two movies and you can join them together in a new project, importing the two movie (.wmv) files.
